How to bet on the Chicago Bears

Moneyline

The moneyline is the simplest of bets, decided by the straight-up winner and loser of each game. Consider the following example:

The Bears are considered heavy favorites in this matchup (indicated by -185), requiring a $185 bet to win $100 (plus the initial bet back). The Panthers are the underdog in this matchup, paying out $410 total for a $100 bet ($310 in winnings). How much either team wins or loses by does not matter in moneyline betting, the payout remains the same.

Point spread

Division

Betting on the point spread is determinant on how many points a team wins or loses by. Take the following example:

  • Bears -2.5 (-110)
  • Vikings +2.5 (-110)

In this example, Chicago is favored by 2.5 points, indicated by “-2.5.” If the Bears win the game 23-20, the Bears (-2.5) win the bet and would have a total payout of $19.09 on a $10 bet ($9.09 in profit). The point total refers to the over/under line set by books. You can always string bets together in the form of parlays or teasers. In addition from a few key players like Trubisky, Gipson, and Ifedi; the Bears have a rash of role players like DL Roy Robertson-Harris, EDGE Barkevious Mingo, and RG Rashaad Coward due new contracts. Gipson is 31 years old, but was a pivotal piece for Chicago for the past few seasons; he should be able to earn an extension with the Bears. Despite being franchise tagged, Robinson is not a guarantee to be on the team for the upcoming season as a tag-and-trade is a real possibility.

With the 20th overall pick in the upcoming draft, the Bears are sitting in a void of quarterbacks. The top four (Lawrence, Fields, Wilson, Lance) will more than likely be gone and other signal callers like Alabama’s Mac Jones and Florida’s Kyle Trask would be considered a reach. This will likely drive the Bears to grab one of the available offensive linemen like Michigan’s Jaylen Mayfield or USC’s Alijah Vera-Tucker. Another option for Chicago would be to trade back in the draft for a team looking to get a sliding player or talented edge rusher and grab their quarterback there.

For the better part of the last decade, when trying to determine who would win the NFC North, the choice has come down to two teams – the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings. Green Bay is the slight favorite (+135) over Minnesota. The Packers showed defensive improvement last year, but they aren’t in the position to be viewed as an elite defense. They have depth issues at all three levels. Offensively, Green Bay still has the best QB in the division (and have for the last 25 years), but aside from WR Davante Adams, the Pack don’t have a legitimate No. 2 receiving threat and their offensive line is injury prone. They’re coming off a 13-win season, but many analysts thought they were a fraudulent 13-3 – and may have been right.

Minnesota is at a crossroads. The Vikings have the best top-to-bottom roster, but their commitment to keeping their own players has led to a huge disparity in player contracts and has pressed Minnesota tight against the salary cap. Throw in that three of their top five defensive backs are set to hit free agency and one of the other two (cornerback Xavier Rhodes) could be asked to take a pay cut or get released because his play dropped significantly.

Chicago, 8-8 last season, took a huge step back after running away with the NFC North title in 2018. One of the reasons (aside from injuries) was that the offense didn’t have the security blanket of the power run game that RB Jordan Howard provided to close out games they were leading. Much more onus was laid at the feet of QB Mitch Trubisky and he struggled. Without defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, the defense also took a step back, despite having arguably the best linebacker corps in the league.

Detroit hasn’t won the division since 1993, when it was the NFC Central and had five teams. Pedigreed coaches have come and gone without any success and, in his first two seasons, former Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia has a record of 9-22-1. The Lions need to build through the draft and have many more hits than misses to compete.
